QUADERNI DI LETTERATURA ITALIANA

This supplementary resource allows students to deepen their knowledge of the Italian language and develop their key skills by working through exercises on a significant work of contemporary Italian literature. NOTE: This book does bnot include the full literary text.

The focus of this book is Silone's 'Fontamara' which is set during the Fascist dictatorship. The story takes place in the village of Fontamara, Abruzzo, where the impoverished community desperately struggle to farm the land, isolated, illiterate, and now ridiculed and cheated by the greedy Impresario, a ruthless businessman. Between attempts of protest and revenge, the emerging love story of Bernardo and Elvira, and the historical references to the Fascist period, Ignazio Silone depicts a cross-section of Italian life at the beginning of the 20th century with profound reflections on corruption, censorship, freedom and society which still resonate today.
