This useful grammar book with exercises gradually develops understanding of the structures and functions of the Italian language with a view to improving students' practical communication skills. (Beginners to Upper intermediate level, CEFR A1-B2).

By introducing each topic with a short cultural text, the learner is encouraged to first observe a particular feature and to reflect on the language in context before identifying the grammatical rule. This allows the student to familiarise themselves with the underlying concept and to better comprehend how the language is used in practice.

The grammatical rule is then presented and examined in detail, followed by a series of brief exercises to consolidate the learner's theoretical understanding. A further section "Metti in pratica" enables the student to put their grammatical knowledge into action with a variety of more communicative activities.

STRUCTURE

The book makes use of clear explanations and is organised into 3 parts:
Suoni e segni - a short introduction to the sounds (phonemes) used to pronounce Italian words, the Italian alphabet, correct spelling and pronunciation.
La forma della parole - 9 units, each focussing on a particular word form such as nouns, articles, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions.
La struttura della frase - 4 units which look at various aspects of sentence structure and how different clauses are put together.

Each unit covers a number of topics and is divided into two levels of difficulty, first covering the basics and then providing more in-depth analysis. The diverse written and audio texts presenting each topic range from literary extracts to news bulletins, articles and advertisements, offering an insight into Italian culture while studying the language.
