Ignazio Silone

Ignazio Silone

 Ignazio Silone

Ignazio Silone (real name Secondo Tranquilli) was born in Pascina dei Marsi, Italy, on 1 May 1900. His early life was marked by tragedy. Shortly after the death of his father, he lost his brother and then his mother in the 1915 earthquake. Left without home or parents, he went to live with his grandmother in a very poor area. He attended a boarding school but left, aged 17 and became involved in political activities. He was arrested and prosecuted for having organised anti-war demonstrations. Around the same time, he moved to Rome and threw himself into politics. He became secretary of the "Unione Socialista Romana", editor for "Avanti!" and "l'Avanguardia",a weekly magazine for young socialists. In 1921, he took part in the creation of the Italian communist party as a representative of the Socialist Youth. He moved to Trieste in 1922 and worked as the editor of "Il Lavoratore". This only lasted a few months as the newspaper was constantly persecuted by the fascist government. He fled Italy in 1923 and went to Germany , France and Spain, still being involved in political activities. In the late 1920's, he gradually drifted away from commuinism. He moved to Zurich in 1928, where he wrote his most famous novels "Fontamara" and "Pane e vino". He left the communist party in 1931. Despite ill-health, he turned to politics once again in the late 1930's and directed the Centro Estero del Partito Socialista in Switzerland. In 1944, he returned to Italy and joined the Partito Socialista Italiano but withdrew from politics when that party joined the Partito Socialdemocratico. He turned to writing and produced 3 novels within the next 10 years. After many years of illness, he died in a clinic in Geneva on 22 August 1978. There is a theory that Silone was also an informer for the fascist police during the time he was an active member of the communist party, under the pseudonym Silvestri.
