Piero Chiara

Piero Chiara

 Piero Chiara

Born in Viarese in 1913, Piero Chiara was not an academic and during his life took great pride in informing people that he was a self-taught writer. It was not until 1945, after he was forced to take refuge in Switzerland as the Specialist Fascist court had ordered his arrest, that Chiara published his first work, a collection of poems entitled "Incantavi". This publication was followed in 1950 by "Itinerario svizzero" and "Dolore del tempo" in 1959. Once Chiara returned to Italy, much of his time was spent contributing to the "Corriera della Sera" and his first novel, "Il piatto piange" was not published until 1962. After the success of this publication, Chiara published "La spartizione", "Il balordo" and "Con la faccia per terra" - an account of his memories of Sicily, his father's birthplace. Amongst his most famous titles are "L'uovo al cianuro" and "La stanza del vescovo", the latter winning Chiara the Premio Napoli and the subject of a film directed by Dino Risi. Piero Chiara continued to write with great creativity right up until his death in 1986.
