 Gabriele D'Annunzio

Gabriele D'Annunzio was born in Pescara, Italy, on 12 March 1863 into a bourgeois family. In 1879, against his father's will, he published a collection of poems called "Primo vere", which offered the young author an early success. He then started collaborating to newspapers. Having finished secondary school, he moved to the capital with the intentions of studying literature at the University of Rome. He never completed his studies, but lived a life of luxury and became a predominant figure of the cultural and mundane scene of the time. The scandal of his relationship with the duchess Maria Hardouin di Gallese concluded in their wedding in 1883, from which 3 children were born. His first novel "Il Piacere" was published in 1889. He moved to Naples in 1891 and wrote for the "Corriere di Napoli". By the late 1890's, his books had started to circulate outside Italy. In 1897 he became deputy within the right-wing government, but he left in 1900 and joined the extreme-left. He then moved to a villa near Florence, La Capponcina, in 1898, where he lived in luxury with his successive mistresses. To escape his creditors, he moved to France in 1910 with his new lover. There, he composed some works in French, whilst still writing for the "Corriere della Sera", and became a mundane figure of the "belle époque". After World War I broke out, he returned to Italy and joined the military forces as a voluntary. He took part in many dangerous missions and lost an eye. After the war, along with a group of soldiers, they occupied the town of Fiume in the conflict regarding Istria and Dalmazia and declared it a republic, until the army intervened in December 1920. D'Annunzio retired to Guardone, on the Guarda lake, where he spent the last years of his life. He was elected president of the Accademia Italiana in 1937 and died on 1 March 1938 of a brain haemorrhage.
