Alessandro Manzoni

Alessandro Manzoni

Alessandro Manzoni was born on 7 March 1785 in Milan, Italy. His father was a land-owner, and his mother the daughter of the famous writer Cesare Beccaria. In 1792, his parents obtained legal separation and Manzoni stayed with his father and followed his education in religious institutions. Having finished his schooling and after a short stay at Pavia University, he moved back to Milan. His first poems were written as a teenager, "Il Triunfo della libertà" (1801) and "Autoritratto" (1802), and he then moved to Paris to stay with his mother in 1805, where he imbibed the Voltarian principles. His first poems were followed by "In morte di Carlo Imbonati" (1806) and "Urania" (1809), which all belong to the classical school, of which Manzoni was one of the most important figures. In 1808, he married Henriette-Louise Blondel. When they married, she was a Protestant but converted to Catholicism in 1810 and so did Manzoni too. They settled in Milan, where Manzoni continued writing. However, following his conversion, his style changed and Manzoni became one of the predominant figures of romanticism. He began a series of twelve "Inni Sacri", to celebrate the major feasts of Catholicism, of which only five were written ("la Resurrezione" was one of them, written in 1812). He also wrote two tragedies "Il Conte di Carmagnolia" (1820) and "L'Adelchi" (1822), as well as an ode to the death of Napoleon, "Il Cinque Maggio" (1822). His masterpiece, "I Promessi Sposi" was written between 1821 and 1825 and re-written in 1840, a version which was stylistically superior and in Tuscan, the language of united Italy. Manzoni was an ardent patriot, strongly in favour of the unification of Italy, and his influence on the development of a consistent Italian prose was immense. By 1827, most of his creative work was done and Manzoni concentrated on linguistic studies. He died on 22 May 1873 and Verdi wrote his Requiem on the first anniversary of his death.
