Giovanni Verga

Giovanni Verga

 Giovanni Verga

Born in Catania in 1840, Giovanni Verga abandoned his law studies to concentrate on his writing. He moved to Florence in 1865 where he wrote his first novels, "Una peccatrice" and "Storia di una capinera". It was during his time in Milan, frequenting with the more liberal members of society that he wrote "Eva", "Tigre reale" and "Eros" - the story of the marquis Alberti who by seducing different women discovers his inability to embrace love and life. It was after this period that Verga turned his attentions to the neo-realist style of writing, writing novels which chronicled the inner and intimate lives of the fisherfolk, shepherds and smalltown people of Sicily and in 1880 he wrote his masterpiece "I Malavoglia". Often considered one of the greatest novels of the age, the novel tells the story of the struggles and sacrifices made by the Malavoglia family to repay a debt. Giovanni Verga died in Catania in 1922.
