 Dino Buzzati

Dino Buzzati was born on 16 October 1906 in San Pellegrino, Italy. His bourgeois family then moved to Milan and he enroled on a Law course at the University of Milan. After completing his military service, he started work as a reporter with the national newspaper "Corriere della Sera", with which he would stay until his death. His first novel "Barnabo delle montagne" was published in 1933. In 1939, he was sent to Ethiopia by his newspaper to report on the crisis. On his return in 1940, "Il deserto dei Tartari", considered his masterpiece, was published. But he then returned to the front and was an official war correspondent for the "Corriere della Sera" until the end of World War II.

In 1942 he published "Sette Messaggeri" a collection of short stories, one of which revealed his fear of death and physical deterioration. In 1945 he wrote a children's book, "La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia". For the next fifteen years, he published numerous novels, theatre works, and writings inspired by his diaries.

In 1960, he published "Il grande ritratto", his first attempt at science-fiction, which was followed by "Un amore" in 1963. This was semi-autobiographic as it describes someone who found love at a late age (he got married at 60). In 1965, "Il capitano Pic e altre poesie", his first poetry work, was published.

Besides his writing, Dino Buzzati was always a keen artist and took part in many art festivals and exhibitions. According to him, whether he was writing or painting, he was working towards the same goal: telling a story. In 1970 he published "Poema a fumetti", illustrating his poems with his own drawings. He died in Milan on 28 January 1972.<
